Cuphead's gameplay is centered around continual master fights, interspersed with run-and- gun situations. Each of these master fights and run-and- gun situations is housed in one of four different worlds, with the fourth world containing the final fight against the Devil himself. Each master fight includes a simple, normal, and expert difficulty mode (with the exception of the final two heads, which warrant a simple mode). Defeating every master on normal mode is needed to complete the game, while expert mode is uncorked upon completion. While utmost master battles take place on land, several heads are rather fought in planes in situations which play like side-scrolling shoot'em ups. The game also includes part- playing rudiments and a branching position sequence. (1) (2) Player characters have horizonless lives, maintaining all outfit between deaths. (1) Equippable munitions and special capacities known as Charms can be bought from Porkrind's Emporium, an in- game shop, using coins plant in situations and the overworld. Player characters can use a slighting" turn" attack on objects marked in pink to colorful goods, the most important of them being adding a"super cadence"that enables more important attacks. The super cadence is represented by a row of five playing cards, all of which must be filled in order to use one of the three strongest attacks ("Super Trades") in the player's force. A less important strike can be executed at the cost of one card, its particular form determined by the presently equipped armament. The Super Trades must be earned by entering three mausoleums, one in each of the first three worlds, and eluding a group of overrunning ghosts to stop them from reaching an charnel at the center of the screen.
After completing a position, the player is ranked with a grade grounded on their performance, grounded on factors similar as the time taken to complete the position, damage avoided, and number of sidestepped attacks. The situations are accessible through a top-down perspective overworld with its own secret areas. (2) The game also has a two- player original collaborative mode.
